the two boxwood shrubs I purchased last year have turned yellow but I do see some green. How do I know if they are dead and I should start over or will they possibly come back?
Sounds like some winter damage to me. Green is a good sign! Boxwoods tend to drop their oldest leaves and then replace them with new ones. I'd take a wait and see attitude with the boxwoods. By mid summer you should have a better idea of what needs to be pruned off to allow the new green leaves to take center stage.
Best wishes with your boxwoods!
