To prepare a planting bed, usually the best addition is organic matter such as good quality compost, old rotted autumn leaves, or very well aged and composted stable manure/bedding, for examples.

You would also want to run some basic soil tests to check fertility and pH. This will tell you if you need to fertilize and if you need to adjust the pH by adding lime.

After mixing the above into the soil and raking it smooth, you are ready to plant seeds or transplants. Most plants are started around or after the last spring frost, so it is not too late at all. Usually, the seed packet will have directions on it as to whether to plant before or after the last spring frost. You can check your average frost date at the following government web site. You may need to cut and paste the complete url to make it work correctly.

Please check with your local store to see what kinds of seeds they have in stock on hand. Good luck with your new garden!
