Living close to the beach, our backyard tends to contain mostly sand. I would like to know if it is possible to put in and maintain a lawn with such soil conditions.

It is possible to grow a lush, healthy lawn on sandy soil; frequent watering and feeding is the answer. I'd recommend amending the soil with some organic matter (compost, aged-manure, etc.) to help the soil hold moisture and nutrients. Once you've seeded or installed sod, water deeply to encourage a deep root system. Then plan on watering every 3-4 days during the growing season. I think you'll be happy with the results.
