Slugs can be controlled several different ways. One is to use a slug bait containing iron phosphate as the active ingredient, follow the label directions for how to use it. Another method that can help is to rake and disturb the top layer of soil and mulch in early spring while there is still frost at night -- this can freeze them before the start of the growing season and reduce the population. Another approach is to trap them using stale beer in slug traps sold for this purpose, another is to hand pick them at night when they are active and drop them into soapy water. I have also found that watering in the evenings tends to attract them, so if you water try to do so in the morning.
