Our grass type is zoysia, which does very well in our heat/dry climate, but I can't keep it out of the flower beds for the life of me. I'm constantly digging it out and am quite disgusted with it. Do I have any alternatives to killing it all off and trying another type of grass? By the way, I have tried killing it all off, and it comes back just the same----very hardy stuff!

Zoysia is very hardy stuff, indeed. It has fairly deep roots and spreads by stolons, so you've got to dig out each and every one to completely control it. You might want to start by constructing an 8-12 inch deep barrier between your lawn and your flower beds so the roots can't creep into the beds. If you can't dig the roots and stolons out of the beds, try using a fabric weed-barrier over the soil and cutting holes in it to plant your flowers. If all else fails, dig the area to expose the roots of the grass and use an herbicide like WOW or DynaWeed. These herbicides have a corn gluten meal base and are safer to use than products like Round-Up. You may have to apply the herbicide multiple times, and re-dig multiple times to completely eradicate the Zoysia. WOW is available from Gardens Alive, 5100 Schenley Pl, Lawrenceburg, IN 47025 (812) 537-8650. DynaWeed is available through Soil Technoligies Corp. (515) 472-3963.
