|I live in south jersey and we recently had to dig up part of our front lawn to repair plumbing. when does grass seed need to be planted? do i need to do the whole lawn? whats the process for growing grass
|You need to get the grass seed down as soon as possible, the later in the spring the more difficult it is to establish grass from seed. You can plant just the bare areas to patch the lawn. Loosen the soil down about six inches and work in organic matter such as compost, smooth it out and rake it smooth, and then sprinkle the seed. Rake lightly to assure good seed to soil contact. Spread a very thin loose layer of straw over the bare spots to help shade the soil and keep it cool. Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist until the seed germinates. Late summer to early fall is the best time of year to do lawn work, so if you are not satisfied with the patches by then, you have another (better) opportunity to work on the lawn.
