My dad had crepe mrytle's planted in his yard and he has passed away. We did not get to cut them back before they started blooming. Then the frost got them and they have dead leaves on them above where new growth is coming out. Can we trim them back now or will it kill them?

You can still trim off winter killed branches now, it will not harm the plants. You could also shape the new growth slightly if needed, but do not prune it back hard. These bloom on the new growth so extensive pruning could delay or limit flowering.
