We live where it can get 120 degrees in the shade. I just planted a rose in a planter. It gets sun until around 2:00. I put a shade over the top. Will it be ok? or should I plant it in the ground.

About 40 percent of the rose bushes sold in the U.S. used to be grown in the West Valley before housing developments croweded them out, so roses can take our sun juts fine, but they need to have established root systems. Since you just transplanted it, a site where it gets protection from intense afternoon sun is good at this time of year. Soil will dry out faster in a planter than in the ground, so add several inches of organic mulch (compost, bark chips, dried leaves) on top of the soil to help maintain moisture and reduce soil temperatures. Be sure water penetrates the entire depth of the rootball each time you water. Your goal is to water deeply and as infrequently as possible, to maintain consistent soil moisture. Good luck!
