Pinching refers to cutting off the growing tip of a plant, typically using your fingernails to break off the tender new growth. You can encourage the plant to branch at the point where your pinch breaks it off. Ideally you would pinch very young plants so the branching starts down low. If you have taller plants, you may need to trim a bit off rather than just pinch. Cut or pinch just above a leaf or joint.
