Most perennials bloom for just a short time each year. To produce all season color you would need to plant a selection of different perennials that bloom at different times. For example on an eastern exposure with full sun all morning, you could try daffodils, Siberian iris, cranesbill (Geranium), Echinacea purpurea, Rudbeckia fulgida, Hemerocallis, tall border Phlox, and Sedums.
