Before planting grass seed or laying sod, you'll need to prepare the soil by loosening it down about six inches, adding organic matter, and removing existing weeds. You should also run some basic soil tests to check fertility and pH, then add fertilizer and/or lime according to the test results. Your local Cornell extension should be able to help you with the soil tests and interpreting the results, they can also recommend the best type of grass seed to plant. The best time of year to do major lawn work is, surprisingly, early September. Here is additional information you may find helpful. (You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.)

Good luck with your lawn!
