What is the best type of tomato to plant in a container? What would be the best way to plant tomatoes in a container? |
In my experience, cherry tomatoes seem to grow more reliably in containers because they are less demanding plants than the full size tomatoes but you can grow all kinds in large pots. To grow tomatoes in containers, start with a large container of at least a five gallon size or even a half whiskey barrel size. Use a soil mix formulated for container plants. Add water holding crystals if you wish, they can help reduce watering needs in late summer when the weather is hot and the plants have grown large in proportion to the container. Install a support for the plant when you plant it or place the container next to a support. Plan on watering as needed to keep the soil evenly moist, not sopping wet and never dried out. Fertilize with a water soluble fertilizer or a slow release granular fertilizer per the label directions. Good luck with your tomatoes! |
