How do i start the feeding process of growing my grass? We just bought our first home, and the grass is slightly patchy and some areas are discolored. We had alot of weeds, and have since applied two applications of weed be gone to kill the weeds, and now i am ready to start the process of putting seeds down to grow some new grass, but i have no idea of what to do first or what product would be best. PLEASE HELP!!!

Bare spots can be patched using a patch kit (sold where grass seed is sold) or by loosening the soil down about six inches, adding some compost, then seeding. Keep the spot evenly moist until germination occurs.

Also, regular mowing is important in developing a thick healthy turf. Mow at three inches and mow often enough that you never remove more than one third the grass at a time.

To determine fertilizer requirements, you should run some basic soil tests to check fertility and pH. Fertilize and/or spread lime based on the results of the tests.

If your lawn needs extensive renovation, early September is surprisingly the best time of year to do that. In the meantime, correct mowing and fertilization and pH can go along way toward improving the existing grass.

Your local county extension should be able to help you with the soil testing and interpreting the results and may also have lawn maintenance and establishment information available. You may also find some useful information at their web site at
