These do best in full sun all day or at least a half day of sun. Select a location that is well drained, meaning not a soggy low spot. Allow space for them to reach their mature size.

Loosen the soil over an area several times wider than the container or rootball and about as deep. Rough up the sides and bottom of the hole. Plant the tree at the same depth as it grew in the container. Loosen and untwine or cut any encircling roots. Return the soil to the hole, packing it firmly around the roots to assure good soil to root contact. Water thoroughly to settle any air pockets.

Mulch over the root area with several inches of organic mulch year round. Spread it in a flat layer, do not allow it to touch the trunk. This will help keep down weeds, reduce watering needs, and feed the soil slowly as it breaks down.

Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist like a wrung out sponge, not sopping wet/saturated and not dried out. Use your finger to check the soil and see if you need to water. If it is still damp, do not water yet. When you do water, apply it slowly and thoroughly so it soaks down to the deepest roots. After watering, wait a few hours and then dig down to see how far it went; sometimes this is surprising.

The most important thing you can do is to water correctly. Good luck with your dwarf Alberta spruces!
