I just had some irish plants (roots bulbs) given to me. I am unsure as to planting them. I would like inform on planting them. Do they require lots of sun or do they need some shade? Also do they spread or just multiply in root form?

I think you have some iris rhizomes. Iris need full sun all day and a spot that is well drained. The spread slowly in a clump by extending the rhizome. Plant bearded iris about 1 to 2 feet apart. Loosen the soil down about a foot and mix in a two to four inch layer of compost. To plant, dig a shallow hole 10 inches in diameter and 4 inches deep. Make a ridge of soil across the middle and place the rhizome on the ridge, spreading the roots down both sides. Fill the hole with soil, and firm it gently. In clay soil, the top of the rhizome should be exposed. In sandy soil, rhizomes can be buried with a thin layer of soil. Water thoroughly at planting. Keep your iris bed mulched and weeded, but do not lay mulch over top of the rhizomes.
