I have recently purchased 4 emerald green arborvitae shrubs from home depot garden center. I am having a difficult time finding out how to plant them, where to plant them, how far to plant them from each other and other objects, and what type of landscaping is best to put around them?

These are upright pyramidal shaped shrubs growing to about fifteen feet tall and three to four feet across. You want to space them so they have enough room to reach their mature size without crowding. They do best in a full sun location with soil that is evenly moist yet well drained.

It is best to leave the root area unplanted and covered with organic mulch so they can grow and establish without competition from nearby plants. The mulch should be about three inches deep year round in a flat layer over the root area, do not allow it to touch the trunk.

If you want to grow them in a mixed border type of situation, keep your flowers several feet away from the shrub so they don't prevent light from reaching the foliage and so the roots dont interfere with each other. As the shrubs grow, take care not to cut their roots when you plant your flowers.

Enjoy your shrubs!
