Should pine needles be included as part of the organic material that we put in the soil around lilacs?

Lilacs prefer an alkaline soil and pine needles are acidic, so it would be best not to use the pine needles in the soil, or as a mulch for your lilacs. Pine needles can be added to the compost pile, or used as mulch material around acid-loving plants like blueberries or azaleas.
