I have a magnolia tree that is not looking to well... It goes through the normal stages... the old leaves fall off and then it flowers, but the new leaves are weak and are stating to fal off... it seems that the tree is in a decline... there looks to be some new bud ate several sports on the tree, but no new leaves are growing... Since we plated, it gets watered about three times a week and we have put down some fertilizer (for acid loving plants)... The tree is very bare, only 3 to 5 leaves at the very end of each branch... Is the tree sick? Should we think about planting a new one? What should we do?

Christopher,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

It sounds like you are doing all you can to help the tree. Just make sure you are not ovewatering and keeping the roots soggy wet as that can causes the symptoms you are describing. It should not be necessary to water more than once a week.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
