|Based on your description it sounds like one of the trees may have suffered a bit of dieback, meaning it has some dead branch tips. You can prune off any dead wood beginning at the branch tips and working your way down the tree until you reach live wood. Dead wood will be off color dull brown or gray with no green inside. It will be brittle and snap in your hand. The buds will be dried out or shriveled or may have fallen off. Live wood will be flexible and supple and there will be green inside the bark, the buds will be plump or there will be leaves growing. The following article describes fruit tree pruning in more detail and has diagrams you may find helpful as well. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.
Good luck with your new trees!
