Slugs and snails drawn to hostas. They work at night so you won't see them but you might see their slilme trails on or near the plants. You can stop them by sprinkling diatomaceous earth on the soil around the plants, by setting traps (commercially available or use a saucer filled with stale beer) or by handpicking them at night by flashlight. (Drop them into soapy or salty water.) Commercial slug baits are also available but be sure to read and carefully follow the label instructions if you use one of them.
