how do I prepare the ground to plant sod.

You would need to prepare it essentially the same way as you would for planting seed. First run some basic soil tests to check fertility and pH. Then add fertilizer and/or lime as indicated by soil tests. Remove or kill existing vegetation. Loosen the soil down at least six inches and work in several inches of good quality compost. Level and rake the surface smooth. Your local Cornell county extension should be able to help you with the soil testing and interpreting the results. Note that sod laying is best done in September.
