|How many seeds from each flower packet can one expect to germinate? When I start impatiens, out of say 30 seeds, I wind up with maybe 5 plants.
|The Federal Government sets minimum germination standards, and you can expect to get greater than 80% germination from any random batch of seeds. Perhaps the poor germination rate you've experienced is due to conditions under which you've tried to germinate seeds.
Impatiens germinate in 21-30 days. They need light, so don't bury the seeds, just sprinkle on top of the seed starting mix and press them in with the flat of your hand. Impatien seeds prefer temperatures of 70F-75F degrees. After you've put the seeds in your trays or flats, cover with plastic wrap and put the trays in a warm place, like on top of the refrigerator. When most of the seeds have germinated, remove the plastic and place the trays under a source of artificial light. Keep the light source 4-6 inches away from the seedlings. Leave the lights on 14-16 hours a day and turn them off at night. When your seedlings have developed their third sets of leaves, transplant them into individual pots so they can develop healthy root systems.
Hope the above information will help you have 80-100% success germinating your impatien seeds.
