Citrus bark is highly susceptible to sunburn, causing it to crack and split. These openings allow easy access for pests and diseases, and if bad enough, will kill the tree. I personally think the white trunks are ugly, so another option is to wrap them loosely with burlap, cardboard, shade cloth, or similar. An even better option is to copy the orchard owners, although there aren't many left in the area to see anymore. They allow lower branches to remain on the tree as a skirt. The foliage covers and protects the trunk, and the fruit is much lower and easier to pick! There is no horticultural reason to prune up the branches, it's just a bad habit that got started and everyone copied. However, if the tree has already been pruned up, then you will need to protect the bark, either with paint or covering. Enjoy your citrus! |
