When the flower is finished blooming and dies, do you pinch off the dead bud or leave it on the plant?

Dahlias sometimes produce a branching flower stem and each branch will have a flower. In this case, cut the spent flower plus the stem it was on, but leave the rest of the stems alone. If your dahlia has a single stem with a single flower, you can cut the stem all the way down to foliage level. Same with the gerbera; cut the flowering stem all the way down to foliage level. Hope this makes sense!
