|OK, I know I probably shouldn't have, but I planted Pymy palms around the pool this spring and they are growing well. My question is this, what do I need to do to protect them when winter comes?
|Fortunately, Pigmy Date Palms are relatively small so winter protection shouldn't be too difficult. It will grow as far north as zone 9 and there are stories of it surviving at occasional temperatures into the mid to low 20s once it has been established. But it must be covered with a sheet or some plastic to provide frost protection. If you cover it overnight, be sure to remove the covering in the morning - if you leave it on after the sun comes up, the fronds can bake in the heat.
Best wishes with your palms!
