Weed control usually requires several approaches. Keep in mind that tilling or disturbing the soil will distribute perennial weeds by spreading pieces of root through the bed and will also bring more weed seeds to the surface. Also, try to never allow weeds to set seed and reseed themselves in your garden.

For persistent perennial weeds, one method is to dig them out or pull them up by the roots. Another is to spot treat with an herbicide containing glyphosate. Be sure to read and follow the label directions.

To stop annual weeds early in the season, hoe lightly to prevent them from germinating and to cut off small seedlings as they come up.

Later in the season, you can cut the weeds off short, cover with several layers of damp newspaper (overlap the edges to exclude light) and top that with a layer of organic mulch several inches deep. This should smother the weeds and will also break down over time to help feed the soil.
