| I have a small (25' x 25') fenced back yard, and would like to add some color to the yard. I am thinking about planting colored bushes, perennials, etc around the edge on three sides. Right now I have Bermuda grass around the edge. Should I start by cultivating around the edge and working in topsoil? Do I need to wait before planting anything? Also, would a mixture of azeleas and lilies work well to provide greenery as well as color? I am afraid a row of lilies would not be enough around the edge. Thank you so much for the help! |
| Eric, I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up! Start by spraying the bermudagrass growing where you want to plant with a product containing glyphosate (Roundup is one brand). Give it a week to work and then rototill or spade the planting areas. Mix in an inch or two of compost as you turn over the soil. You can then begin to plant. While fall is the best planting time you can plant in summer if you keep the soil moist but not soggy.
