What kind of care do hostas require? I'm especially interested in what to do to them after the growing season. Is there a book I could purchase that gives info on caring for all types of perennials?

Lucky for us, hostas don't need much care at all! In general they like a shady spot (though there are varieties that thrive in full sun) with rich soil (enhanced with organic matter like compost, leaf mould, etc.), and good drainage. After the growing season, you wait for the leaves to wither and turn brown, and you chop 'em down. That's it. I fertilize once a year with an all purpose perennial fertilizer. We all have our favorites in the book realm...visit the gardening section of your favorite book store and you will find many great perennial book choices. I like Ortho's "All About Perennials". A lot of info is included and the price is right.
