Buddleia davidii is pruned very short -- nearly to the ground -- in early spring each year. This removes winter damaged stems and also encourages vigorous new growth. This shrub blooms on the new growth of the season so do not prune in mid summer. Some gardeners will pinch or lightly shear their shrub once or twice in late spring as it grows in to encourage branching; some gardeners will also deadhead or remove faded flowers to encourage longer rebloom.
