| I need suggestions to encourage plant growth and fruit. I bought six strawberry plants (that came from a six cell pack) 3 months ago. At first they thrived (many new leaves, flowers and small berries) in a full sun location with regular watering. But then they slowed down growth wise and berries stayed smaller. Now red tinged leaves and few new leaves. A week ago, I re-potted to large 12 inch pots for each single plant with organic mix and fertilized with fish emulsion. They are still in a full sun location. They are everbearing type. The slow growth is confusing as I have june bearing strawberry plants (that came from a six cell pack) that are booming with big leafy crowns and 6-8 blooms. I have only had them 5 weeks. They are in morning shade to full afternoon sun. and are in long rectangular boxes, 2 plants per box. Please advise. |
| Red foliage can indicate a problem with the roots; usually a fungal disease. It doesn't sound like that's what is ailing yours, but I thought I'd share the information anyway. The second most common cause for red leaves is a nutrient deficiency. Fish emulsion is high in nitrogen so I suggest you feed again, this time with a 5-10-10 garden fertilizer. Or, take some of the leaves into the Cooperative Extension office and see if they can give you an informed opinion or even send them away for an analysis. |
