I would like to build a brick patio behind our house and would like to know how to prepare the ground? What materials I will need to do this without using cement. How do I make use it is level? Will cutting away roots kill large trees nearby? |
After removing all the vegetation in the area, you'll want to compact the soil (you can rent a compactor), then lay 3-4" of builder's sand over the area and level it by running a two by four over the top. Set the bricks and then run the compactor over the top to set them. The final step is to dump sand over the entire area and sweep it into the cracks between the bricks. Hose off the residual sand and you'll have a brand new patio. Staff at the Home Depot can give you more detailed instructions. Cutting away large roots can compromise a tree's health and might loosen its anchor in the ground. I'd go around the roots wherever possible. |
