| Hydrangeas bloom on new shoots which develop from old wood. Pruning is usually done in the early spring, cutting the canes back to 18-24" above ground level. The new shoots which develop on these canes should bloom in the summer. You can cut the spent flowers off the plant, along with some of the stem if you'd like to do some light pruning this summer. Removing the dead flowers and shortening the flowering stems will make your hydrangeas look more attractive. But, save the major pruning job for early next spring.
