I PLANTED READISH SEEDS ABOUT 3-4 WEEKS AGO? HOW DO I KNOW THEY ARE READY IF THE RADISH GROWS UNDERGROUND? THE LEAVES ABOVE GROUND ARE NOW APPROX 2-3 INCHES HIGH AND THE LEAVES ARE APPROX 2 INCHES WIDE. PLEASE HELP. THANKS---NEW GARDENER!!!

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

You can eat the radishes at any point since they do not ripen like some vegetables do. If you let them grow too long or get stressed the roots get tough and hotter. Grow them quickly and harvest when the roots are just about to reach a good size, which is little larger than a marble with the small "cherry belle" types. Sample a few to get the idea how large or mature you want them to be. With radishes the most common mistake is to grow them too crowded or in too much shade so they don't form roots well.
