Missing bark on sugar maple - Knowledgebase Question

The bark is missing on several of my maple trees in my woods about 2 feet high almost all around. Did not see any tracks or bugs. Thank you, Linda Mueller

If it looks chewed, I'd suspect local wildlife; if it appears to have rotted off, it could be winter freeze damage. Either way, there's not much you can do aside from allowing the tree to callous over the wound. If you think it might be local critters, you can wrap the trunk with hardware cloth or chicken wire to keep the critters from gnawing the bark again.
