| Over the last 2yrs my lawn has taken a backseat to a new home addition, of which we did ourselves, but now our lawn looks horriable. Please give me some suggestions on how to repair the lawn. It is a mixture of grasses, some fescue, bermuda, rye, & of course dirt. I was wondering if, this fall, I should just start by killing off everything, tilling the yard, leveling it off and starting over, but I don't want to spend that much time on it if it's only going to look bad again next spring. Please help, I desire a beautiful green lawn. |
| What you propose is one way to renovate a lawn, but you might be able to get it into shape without that much work. If it's weedy, use a weed and feed fertilizer. Then rake out the dead patches and overseed the entire lawn with fresh seeds. Keep the lawn well watered and mowed at the right height and plan on feeding it 4 times a year. If, in the fall, it still doesn't look terrific, you can rent an aerator which takes plugs out of the soil. Leave the plugs on the ground (they will dissolve with the rain and water from the sprinkler). Then spread a thin layer of sand over the entire lawn. The sand will work its way into the holes where the plugs of soil came out and the sand will help loosen the soil and make it easier for the grass roots to take hold. Best wishes with your lawn! |
