|I have just planted a spring Mesclun Mix in a raised bed.
When it germinates, what is the best way to water it? I
am using a sprinkling can now, but am hesitant to water it with overhead watering due to leaf diseases?
|There will be a variety of lettuces and herbs in your Mesclun garden. I'd continue to sprinkle the bed until the plants become a little sturdier. After that you can apply water to the soil and roots by flooding the bed, or by setting a sprinkler up to water the plants. Try to apply water early in the day so the leaves have a chance to dry off before nightfall, and you'll help avoid diseases. You can also thin the plants - as they grow they may become overcrowded. When plants have to compete for light, nutrients and water they becomed stressed, and stressed plants are more susceptible to diseases. When you thin you increase air circulation around the plants, and that's another way to help keep them disease free. Don't forget to add the plants you've thinned to your next salad. Nothing tastes better than produce fresh from the garden!|
