| The most important thing is to remove the faded bloom to encourage reblooming. If you cut further down on the stem, the plant will take a longer time to rebloom but the flower will be larger. If you cut off less, the plant will rebloom sooner but the flowers will be smaller. Some gardeners have a strong preference for larger blooms and will deadhead accordingly -- for example if they want to show their roses. Another thing to consider is which direction you would like the new growth to follow. Cut above an outward facing bud if you can, to direct the new growth away from the center of the plant.
