Sunflowers do have an allelopathic effect in some cases, including to itself. I would suggest harvesting the flowers or cleaning up the hulls regularly so they do not leach or decompose into the soil. The worst cases seem to be where a birdfeeder is located all winter with a heavy concentration of the hulls. You could experiment with planting tomato or okra and see what happens.
