|When is the best time of year to take raspberry root cuttings for starting new plants? How many years before good production? Also, if I dig a complete plant to transplant, when is the best time? |
|To make a root cutting, simply cut down into the plant's crown with a sharp shovel, dig up a mass of roots, and with a knife or small pruning shears cut them into pieces about 2 inches long. Plant these about 4 inches apart in a well-prepared bed. Lay them flat and cover them with about an inch of a compost, sand and soil mix. Early spring is the best time to make root cuttings.|
After a few weeks, sprouts will appear from the root cuttings and a new bush will grow. After the plants have grown for a couple of years you can transplant them to their permanent home.
I would transplant an entire plant in the fall, so you don't disturb it for this season's harvest.
