I have three new hydrangeas that I have never planted. What do I need to do to take care of them?

Also, I have a new home and would like to put a garden in an area that is in shade until 1pm and then goes to full sun for the rest of the day. What kinds of plants do well in an area with this kind of sun?
thank you.
Helen

You can grow a wide variety of plants including those that like full sun and those that like part shade. You might try bulbs and perennials such as daffodils and crocus, dwarf iris, Heuchera, Baptisia, Salvia, Lilium, Hemerocallis, Echinacea purpurea, tall border Phlox, Papavar, Sedum, Boltonia, Solidago, Helenium, Thyme, Perovskia, Dahlias and Asters --just for a start. Some annuals to add might include petunias, salvia, cosmos, cleome, nicotiana, sunflower and bachelor buttons. Your local professional nursery staff should be able to show you many more plants that would thrive there.

Hydrangeas prefer growing in rich, moist, well draining soil with morning sun and afternoon shade. Amend your planting beds with organic matter prior to planting your hydrangeas (and other plants). Water deeply once or twice a week and they should all be happy.

Enjoy!
