Is Home Depot working with a researcher to develop a disease-resistant Dutch Elm tree? I work in the garden center at Home Depot in Gallup New Mexico and a customer asked me this question. thanks! |
There is on-going research at various universities to develop Dutch elm disease resistant cultivars. The Elm Research Institute (New Hampshire) is working with the University of Minnesota and U. of Wisconsin to identify such cultivars. However, at this time, most of the recommended cultivars are for the northern states, not for the southwest. You can tell your customer that research is on-going and as soon as cultivars are identified, growers will swing into action and the trees will be available to homeowners via garden centers such as Home Depot. |
