The leaves of the yucca last 2-3 years. At that time they dry up and should be removed from the plant. The oldest leaves dry up first and as you remove them from the bottom of the plant, you'll have a bare stem. So, as new leaves are produced on top, and old leaves die off at the bottom of the plant, the bare "trunk" will elongate. It will take a period of many years to have a sizable bare stem on your yucca plant.
