|English ivy (Hedera helix) climbs by means of small rootlets that grow along their stem. According to The New York Botanical Garden Illustrated Encyclopedia of Horticulture: "Contrary to opinions sometimes expressed, ivy clothing the trunks and bare branches of trees does no appreciable harm. Only if it invades the leafy portion of the crown and so inteferes with light and air circulation does serious damage result."
