My magnolia tree is 3 years old. Bloomed 1st year but not since - It is straggly and just would like to know when and how we should trim back.

Imogene,

It may need more sunlight. Straggly growth may be due to too much shade. It also could be that the tree needs a little fertilizing. If the roots were tightly bound in a circle around the growing container it could also be struggling with that condition now. There is not much to do about this but cutting down through the original circle of roots vertically would help in the long run as it would then let them branch out and grow outward normally. Wait until late winter to prune if you need to prune the plant.
