In my east garden where my petunias are planted in the ground, covered with mulch, there is a reddish tuber growing, the flies love it! What is it? How do I get rid of it, besides pulling it out? It looks like it came from another planet! Never saw it before. Thanks for your help once again.

I think this is some sort of fungal growth. When we see mushrooms in the garden, they are the fruiting bodies of an extensive underground system. They feed on decaying organic matter. Once the organic matter is decomposed, the mushrooms will stop appearing naturally. In the meantime, leave it in place or if it is bothersome, raking them up is the best approach.
