When is the best time to prune potentilla. Can I prune it now? thank you jim

To keep older plants in top blooming form, it is essential to remove 1/3 of the oldest stems each year. This is typically done in the spring when new growth can cover the pruning cuts, but you can prune it back now - there's still some summer growing time left. Don't remove more than about one-third of the live growth or you'll put your plant into shock.
