|Penstemon is the best performer in my dry arid LA garden. Through the years I have collected many different colors. |
However, I still am not comfortable enough to try to propagate.
|Penstemon can be started by seed (collect or let the flowers spill their seeds in the garden), by cuttings, or by root division. Take softwood cuttings in the late spring or early summer, remove the lower leaves, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, plantin potting soil, and place in a coldframe. Semi-ripe cuttings can be taken in late summer or early fall. Use the same treatment and place them in a coldframe. Or, divide the plant by digging in the early spring, cutting the root ball into several portions and replanting them immediately. Penstemons are spectacular plants when given the right environment - you seem to have the perfect spot for them!|
