Regardless of the advancements in chemical control, sanitation is still the best method of controlling all types of filth-breeding flies both in and around the home. These types of flies include: the house, stable or dog, flesh, blow, bottle, filter, soldier, and vinegar or fruit fly, and eye gnats. Since flies breed where garbage, animal manure, and decaying vegetation accumulate, clean these places first. Dry, spread, or dispose of all manure, and use garbage cans that can be tightly sealed with a lid. Proper fitting screens and screen doors that open outward will help keep flies from entering the home or other structures around the home.

To kill flies inside the home use a space spray or aerosol containing pyrethrins plus a synergist. Spray the aerosol for a few seconds around the room, leave the room and close it up for about 15 minutes. Outside of the house apply a residual or surface spray containing dimethoate (Cygon or Defend), or naled (Dibrom). Follow the dosage and application directions on the container label. To kill flies in and around farm buildings and other animal structures apply a residual spray, insecticide bait, or a larvicide to the areas where flies may breed. This will help eliminate adult flies and those that have recently hatched. Keep in mind that flies generally migrate from one-half to two miles, but are capable of migrating one to four miles. Therefore, even if you give it your best effort, you still may have an abundance of flies due to neighboring lands and other nearby homeowner?s practices.
