I recently had a raised bed made especially for my roses. Thedirt came from a local landsacping company who call it DAT dirt and say it is full of nutrients and composte. Ialready addedsom horticuluran vermiculate, earthworm droppings and extra composte. The ptoblem is that it compacts and hardens. What should I do?

Barbara,

The solution to hard and compact soil is to add compost. I would spread a couple of inches over it and then work it in as well as you can. Then cover the soil surface with a mulch cover to further reduce drying and hardening of the soil.
