|The sprouts are growing up from the old root system. The simplest control is to mow them off repeatedly until the root reserves are eventually exhausted. If you mow your lawn regularly, the sprouts should stop in a year or two. You could also try cutting them off and painting the cut stem with an herbicide containing glyphosate. This must be done with care as the glyphosate will kill lawn grass or other plants it touches. Read and carefully follow all of the label directions.
